Nigeria: Military Chief Visits Borno Amid Resurgence of Terrorist Attacks

Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents attacked four military bases this week. This has caused fear among residents, especially those recently resettled in their homes.

Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff Chris Musa is visiting Borno State. The attacks on military bases prompted his visit. Reuben Kovangiya, an army captain, shared this news with journalists in Maiduguri on Thursday.

Kovangiya stated that Musa will arrive at the Headquarters Theatre Command today at 9:30 am. He will be accompanied by senior officers from Defence and Services headquarters.

The spokesperson did not explain the reason for the visit. However, it likely relates to the recent surge in attacks by ISWAP and Boko Haram. These groups were previously thought to have weakened.

The insurgents launched attacks on Monday and Tuesday. This has raised concerns among residents, particularly those who have just returned home. The state government sees these renewed attacks as a serious threat to its IDP resettlement project.

In April, Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru and Minister of State Bello Matawalle visited Borno State with Musa and service chiefs to discuss security issues. As of 11:15 a.m., the military chief and his team were expected at the Air Force Base in Maiduguri when this report was filed.
