Rebel forces affiliated with Rwanda have seized the town of Masisi in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), marking the second town captured by the M23 group in two days.
This takeover is part of the group's ongoing expansion in North Kivu, forcing thousands to flee.
The M23, which has controlled large parts of eastern DRC since 2021, claims to be liberating the country.
The capture has intensified the region's humanitarian crisis.
Efforts by Angola to mediate talks between DRC and Rwanda broke down last month, while the M23’s actions continue to raise tensions, with accusations of Rwanda’s involvement in exploiting DRC’s mineral wealth.
