Somalia: Farmaajo Defends Tactical Withdrawal of Somali Armed Forces, Urges Unity and Support for National Army

Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo defended the Somali National Army (SNA). This follows recent withdrawals from key military positions, including Aadan Yabaal.

In a press release on Tuesday evening, he addressed these issues on Facebook. Farmaajo explained that the army's withdrawal from frontline areas in Middle Shabelle was strategic. He dismissed claims from extremist propaganda suggesting these retreats indicated defeat.

Farmaajo emphasized that tactical withdrawals are part of military planning. He noted that Somalia's combat environment against Al-Shabaab is fluid.

"The withdrawal of national forces does not mean a military loss," he stated. He urged the Somali people to support their national army in fighting terrorism.

"I call on the Somali people to stand firmly behind their army," he said. "Only through unity can we achieve victory over the enemy."

Farmaajo recalled significant territorial gains during his administration from 2017 to 2022. He highlighted major successes between 2018 and 2020 when government forces liberated towns like Marka and Jannaale.

He urged current leaders to prioritize national interests over politics. Farmaajo called for renewed commitment to political stability and constitutional reform.

"I appeal to our leadership to work together for peace and unity," he concluded. His statement comes at a crucial time as Somalia faces security threats from Al-Shabaab while navigating political transitions.
