El Hareri, Somalia, May 18 — Clashes between Somali government forces and Al-Shabaab fighters continue. The fighting has entered its second day along the border of Middle Shabelle and Hiiraan regions. Both sides have suffered heavy casualties.
The conflict is focused around Ceel Hareeri village. This village lies between Adan Yabal in Middle Shabelle and Moqokori in Hiiraan. Government troops are supported by local militias called Macawiisley. They are battling Al-Shabaab militants linked to Al-Qaeda.
"Fighting is intense and has escalated since yesterday," a local resident said. He spoke to Radio Shabelle by phone. "Both sides are receiving reinforcements, and heavy weapons fire continues."
Unofficial reports indicate over 20 people may be killed or wounded. However, the exact number is unclear due to restricted access for independent observers.
Al-Shabaab aims to control key routes connecting Adan Yabal and Moqokori. This control could help them launch further operations in central Somalia. Meanwhile, government forces and allied militias are defending their territory. They also aim to reclaim ground lost in earlier counter-offensives.
"The village is strategically important for both sides," a security source in Mogadishu stated. "For Al-Shabaab, it offers a potential launch point into Hiiraan." He added that for the government, it could serve as a base for operations against Adan Yabal.
This fighting occurs amid renewed efforts by the Somali government against Al-Shabaab in Hirshabelle state. Recently, the group regained control of several areas, including Abooreey town.
