Washington — The United States government announced a new travel ban on Wednesday. This ban specifically targets Somali nationals, preventing them from entering the country.
President Donald Trump signed the proclamation. The administration claims this measure is necessary to protect against "foreign terrorists" and other security threats. Somalia is one of 12 countries included in the ban. Other countries affected are Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Yemen, Sudan, Eritrea, and Myanmar.
These new restrictions will significantly impact Somali families in the US and abroad. Many already struggle with family reunification and visa access issues. The Somali community in the US is particularly concentrated in Minnesota, Ohio, and Washington.
Community members expressed deep concern about this decision. They view it as an escalation of discrimination against Somalis. Advocates warn that the ban could isolate the Somali diaspora further. It may also complicate efforts to maintain family ties and access humanitarian protections.
