The Western Cape Provincial Government has announced a new speed limit. The limit on the R44 through Betty's Bay will drop from 80km/h to 60km/h. This change affects the commercial area known as "The Hub" and the entrance to Harold Porter Botanical Gardens.
The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure received a request for this change. They conducted an investigation to assess the situation. At a meeting with local councillors, MEC Tertuis Simmers shared the findings.
Simmers confirmed that lowering the speed limit is feasible. He expressed satisfaction with collaboration between his department and the Department of Mobility. New speed limit signs will be installed soon.
However, Simmers reminded drivers that the speed limit is not a target. It represents the maximum legal speed, and motorists must adhere to it.
MEC Isaac Sileku emphasized road safety for all users. He stated that reducing the speed limit protects lives and improves access for residents and tourists. This collaboration shows how both departments can work together effectively.
Simmers noted that smaller towns in Western Cape are expanding rapidly. Road networks must adapt to accommodate growing populations. Tourism is vital for local economies and job creation, so safe roads are essential for continued growth.
