Sudan On Brink of Famine As Fighting Ravages Darfur, UN Warns

The humanitarian crisis in Sudan is worsening. Rival militaries are fighting for control. The UN expressed deep concern on Monday about the escalating violence, especially in North Darfur.

Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that the situation is dire and getting worse. He mentioned intense fighting around El Fasher. Reports indicate increased hostilities, with civilian casualties in recent days.

Displaced persons are suffering greatly. Mr. Dujarric confirmed shelling at the Abu Shouk displacement camp caused civilian injuries and deaths.

Famine is becoming a serious issue. The Abu Shouk camp is one of several hotspots facing famine risks. Other affected areas include Zamzam, Al Salam, and parts of the Western Nuba Mountains. Approximately 640,000 people are impacted.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) urges immediate action to prevent widespread famine. They stress that aid organizations need safe access to those in need as the lean season approaches.

Currently, about 25 million Sudanese face acute food insecurity. This number may peak between June and September. In addition to food aid, agricultural support is crucial for local production.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) needs over $82 million to help 7.5 million farmers with seeds and resources before planting season starts in June.
