Tanzania's fuel revolution slowed down by lack of filling stations

Tanzania is witnessing a surge in the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative to petrol and diesel, offering cleaner and cheaper fuel, particularly for commercial drivers.

However, the country's limited CNG filling stations are creating long queues and delays, hindering the expansion of this promising shift.

While the government pushes for widespread adoption by 2050, only a small fraction of vehicles, including taxis and three-wheelers, have converted to CNG.

The increase in demand has outpaced infrastructure development, and despite the significant savings for motorists, such as paying half the price of petrol, the lack of stations remains a major challenge.

Authorities are working to expand the network, but the current situation continues to frustrate early adopters.
