A tragic road accident occurred on the night of Tuesday, April 23, 2025. It took place in Rukoro Village along the Kisoro–Bunagana Road. Two motorcyclists lost their lives in this incident.
The victims were identified as Ivan Irankunda, 32, and Edward Hafashimana. Irankunda lived in Gapfurizo Village, while Hafashimana was a boda boda rider from Rukundo Town Council. They collided head-on while riding in opposite directions.
Eyewitnesses and police reports indicate both motorcycles were speeding. They were also occupying the middle of the road at the time of the crash. Irankunda died instantly from his injuries. Hafashimana later died at Mutorele Hospital.
Police arrived quickly at the scene. Sgt. James Mbabazi and his team documented the incident and drew a sketch map. They recovered both motorcycles, which are now impounded at Kisoro Central Police Station for inspection.
ASP Elly Maate confirmed that over-speeding and reckless riding likely caused the accident. He urged all road users to exercise caution and follow traffic regulations strictly.
Baker Batamukoraho, General Secretary of Kisoro United Boda Boda Operators, visited the scene as well. He expressed deep sorrow over losing young lives in this tragedy. He urged members to reduce speed and observe road safety regulations to prevent future accidents.
