UN aid trucks come under attack in Sudan

United Nations trucks carrying aid in North Darfur have been attacked. Initial reports indicate "multiple casualties," according to a UN spokesperson.

The Sudanese government reported that "guards, drivers, and civilians" were killed. They blamed the attack on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group. The RSF is currently fighting the army in a civil war.

In contrast, the RSF accused the army of carrying out the assault. This incident occurred in el-Koma on Monday night. The UN stated that the convoy was attacked while waiting to leave for el-Fasher.

El-Fasher is besieged and is the last major area under army control. Civilians and military personnel there have faced attacks from the RSF for over a year.

Four members of the UN convoy were killed on Monday night. Two more were injured, according to RSF spokesperson Basha Tabiq on X.

The el-Koma Emergency Room shared a video of a burnt truck loaded with supplies on Facebook. They attributed the attack to "Sudanese army drones."

El-Koma is controlled by the RSF and has frequently experienced attacks during this conflict. These assaults have led to civilian deaths and damaged infrastructure.

The el-Koma Emergency Room reported at least 89 people killed or injured due to airstrikes by Sudanese army warplanes on Sunday. The army has not responded to these claims.

According to Sudan Tribune, planes struck a busy market in el-Koma.

This war began over two years ago and has caused one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

On Tuesday, Eujin Byun from the UN refugee agency said over four million people have fled since conflict began.

The civil war erupted in 2023 after power struggles between the army and RSF escalated. Both groups had previously staged a coup against Sudan's transition to democracy before their leaders fell out.
