Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has cautioned his ministers against dozing off during meetings, linking their inattentiveness to "indulgence" and lack of discipline.
Speaking at a swearing-in ceremony, he described sleeping on duty as unacceptable, hinting that excessive drinking and socializing might be the cause.
Hichilema warned that such behavior could compromise state secrets and slow public service delivery. Without naming individuals, he noted that some officials leak confidential information during "happy hours."
Since taking office in 2021, he has dismissed several underperforming officials and remains committed to efficiency in governance.
As he prepares for re-election next year, Hichilema emphasized the need for self-control among ministers, urging them to stay alert and prioritize national interests.
