Zimbabwe: Belarus' Lukashenko Says Ready to Rescue Zimbabwe's Hospitals

Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko has promised to improve Zimbabwe's healthcare system. This system is struggling due to government underfunding.

Major hospitals in Zimbabwe cannot provide care because of a lack of basic supplies. Lukashenko, hosting President Emmerson Mnangagwa, said Belarus would help by supplying medicines and equipment.

"We are ready to assist Zimbabwe in creating a comprehensive healthcare system," he stated. He emphasized the need for better access to healthcare for children, women, and all citizens.

Lukashenko noted that Mnangagwa studied Belarus' healthcare system and liked it. He expressed willingness to help build a similar system in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe's healthcare situation may worsen after the U.S. halted funding. This funding had previously helped provide medicines to vulnerable communities.

The government downplays the state of hospitals, but conditions are dire. Patients often must bring their own essential supplies.

On Wednesday, Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube signed an agreement with Lukashenko’s government. This agreement aims to refurbish Parirenyatwa Hospital.

However, critic Hopewell Chin'ono doubts the agreement's transparency. He believes goods from Belarus will not be cheaper than those from South Africa or Europe.

Chin'ono stated on social media that he awaits details on medical goods prices. He suspects they will reveal higher costs than expected.
