Zimbabwe: False Start to a Murky Deal - Mnangagwa Backs Controversial Geo Pomona Waste Management As Refuse Piles Up in Harare

President Emmerson Mnangagwa believes Geo Pomona's takeover of waste management will improve the sector. He made this statement in Harare while launching a waste sorting plant and new refuse collection trucks. The launch included 45 refuse trucks and 100 skip bins. This comes amid complaints from residents about the costly takeover.

Residents are concerned about the agreement between Geo Pomona, the Harare City Council, and the Ministry of Local Government. They argue it was made without proper consultation. Despite this, Mnangagwa insists that Geo Pomona will enhance waste collection in Harare.

He highlighted the ongoing waste collection crisis in Harare. This crisis has led to environmental damage and public health risks. Disease outbreaks have occurred, which he called unacceptable. Mnangagwa emphasized that these issues must be resolved.

He stated that his government aims for clean and safe urban environments by 2030. Good cleanliness and service delivery are vital for governance and national competitiveness.

Geo Pomona began refuse collection earlier this year under Minister Daniel Garwe's leadership. However, they have not fully met their responsibilities yet. Many areas still have piles of uncollected rubbish months after their takeover.

Residents are frustrated with Geo Pomona's performance despite government support for the initiative. Additionally, the City Council will pay US$40 per tonne for waste disposal, raising concerns about costs. Once fully operational, Geo Pomona is expected to collect 650 tonnes daily.

Mnangagwa suggested that other local authorities should adopt Harare’s model for waste management improvement. He urged stakeholders in other towns to learn from these initiatives to enhance waste management across Zimbabwe.
