Zimbabwe: Jailed Bogus Doctor Swindled Prospective Nurse Trainees U.S.$8,000

A man from Bulawayo has been convicted of fraud. Prosper Taurai Vanhuvaone, 29, posed as a qualified doctor. He received a sentence of 42 months in prison.

Vanhuvaone appeared at the Bulawayo Magistrates Court. He faced charges for falsely claiming to be a registered medical doctor. He also misrepresented himself as an agent for certificates of sponsorship (CoS).

The court learned that between February and September 2024, he exploited vulnerable people. This occurred at Mpilo Central Hospital and in Bulawayo's central business district.

Pretending to be a medical practitioner, he deceived several clients. They paid him money with the promise of securing nurse training spots at Mpilo Central Hospital. He also claimed he could process CoS for nurses seeking jobs in the UK.

After his conviction, the magistrate sentenced him to 84 months in jail. However, 18 months were suspended for five years on good behavior. Additionally, 24 months were set aside if he repays US$8,165 by July 30, 2025.

As a result, Vanhuvaone will serve an effective sentence of 42 months. The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe stated this case sends a strong message against fraud. It highlights the serious consequences when public trust is abused for personal gain.
