Police in Mashonaland West have arrested a suspect for stealing a pivot armoured cable worth $7,000.
Inspector Ian Kohwera, the provincial spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), confirmed the arrest. The suspect is 21-year-old Moses Bunou. A manhunt is underway for his accomplices.
Bunou was arrested by ZRP Saruwe. He is linked to a robbery at Scottsdale farm in Selous on May 12, 2025, at 3:00 AM.
Bunou and four others approached the farm's tobacco fields. Themba Sibanda, a 31-year-old guard, was on duty there. The group threatened him with logs and pepper spray.
They tied his hands and legs with shoelaces and pushed him to the ground. Then they cut 540 meters of pivot armoured cables using bolt cutters. The suspects loaded the cables into their getaway car and sped away.
Sibanda managed to untie himself and alerted his supervisor, Anyway Katandika, who is 42 years old. Katandika then informed ZRP Saruwe about the incident.
The police quickly set up a roadblock at the 74-kilometer peg along Harare-Bulawayo road. At around 5:45 AM, a vehicle approached the checkpoint.
When the driver saw the police, he made a U-turn and drove off quickly towards Zimbo Drift farm. Police pursued him until he abandoned the vehicle and fled in different directions.
Bunou was arrested as he was driving a silver Honda Fit with registration number AEY 6065. A search of the vehicle led to recovering all of the stolen armoured cable valued at $7,000.
ZRP is asking anyone with information about the remaining four suspects to contact their nearest police station. One suspect is known only as Byron from Greenside farm in Darwendale.
Kohwera praised Scottsdale farm employees for reporting the case promptly to police. This quick action helps in tracking down suspects efficiently.
