Alabaster Box sues Medikal for GH₵15 million over 'Akwaaba' interpolation

About a week ago, Alabaster Box threatened legal action against rapper Medikal. They have now officially sued him. The Ghanaian a cappella group claims he used part of their song 'Akwaaba' without permission.

Alabaster Box says Medikal included a portion of 'Akwaaba' in his new song, 'Welcome to Africa.' They argue that the first ten seconds of his track directly reproduce their work.

The group believes the title and verses of Medikal’s song show it is derived from 'Akwaaba.' They also claim his aggressive promotion on major streaming platforms worsens the violation.

Alabaster Box's lawyers demand immediate removal of 'Welcome to Africa' from all platforms. They want an end to any marketing or performances related to the track. Additionally, they seek termination of contracts linked to its production and distribution.

They also request that Medikal provide details about revenue generated from the song. Furthermore, they want information on all individuals or companies involved in its promotion and distribution.

If these demands are not met, Alabaster Box will take legal action against Medikal.

In a writ signed by their lawyer Richard Nunekpeku, they state that Medikal only deleted the first ten seconds from YouTube. However, the infringing material remains on other platforms like Audiomack, Boomplay, Spotify, and Apple Music.

The writ describes deleting just ten seconds as disrespectful and an admission of guilt.

Alabaster Box is seeking general damages for this infringement amounting to Ten Million Ghana Cedis (GH₵10 million). They also demand Five Million Ghana Cedis (GH₵5 million) for exemplary damages due to being associated with profane lyrics in his song.
