Gospel artist Mavis Asante has strong views on collaborating with secular musicians. She believes such partnerships are fundamentally wrong and create "noise."
In an interview with Graphic Showbiz on April 28, she shared her thoughts. Mavis recently returned to music with her single, "Victory." She emphasized that gospel musicians have a divine calling that should not mix with secular pursuits.
Mavis questioned the purpose of these collaborations. "Is it for fame? To win souls? For hype?" she asked. She believes each artist has a unique calling, similar to how lawyers and surgeons have different roles.
Ghana's music scene features many collaborations between gospel and secular artists. Songs like "Bebree" by Herty Borngreat featuring Sarkodie and "The Lord’s Prayer" by Joyce Blessing featuring AB Crentsil are popular hits. However, Mavis insists these partnerships are inappropriate.
She stated that the missions of secular and gospel artists do not align. Gospel musicians focus on God, salvation, and spiritual matters. Collaborations only confuse the message and dilute its impact.
Mavis described these collaborations as "noise" in Mass Communication. She advised gospel artists to collaborate within their own genre instead of seeking secular partners.
"There are many gospel artists available for this purpose," she said. Mavis encouraged prayer and discernment before any collaboration. Sometimes, saying no to secular partnerships honors God more than working with big names.
