I helped create Afrobeats - Akon

Senegalese-American singer Akon claims he helped Afrobeats rise globally.

In a recent interview with Sherri Shepherd, he discussed his role. He highlighted his collaborations with Nigerian artists in the late 2000s.

Akon said, “I was in Africa, and time just flew past.” He mentioned that 2008 was when he released his last official album, "Freedom."

He also produced music for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. After that, he traveled to Nigeria and contributed to what is now known as Afrobeats.

He recalled signing Wizkid in 2008 and working with him and Banky W. Akon stated they began developing other artists like PSquare and Dbanj.

Afrobeats has become one of Africa’s most influential cultural exports. In 2023, it gained even more international acclaim.

Top artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido performed at major global events. They also dominated international music charts.
