Telecel Ghana has honored reggae-dancehall musician Epixode with the Music for Good Award. This award recognizes his purpose-driven music that advocates against illegal mining. The presentation took place at the 26th Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).
Epixode received a plaque and GH¢20,000 for his efforts. His song “Chooboi” raises awareness about galamsey, or illegal mining. This issue severely impacts Ghana’s forests, poisons rivers, and threatens livelihoods.
The Music for Good Award appreciates artists who use their influence for positive causes. These include environmental sustainability, youth mentorship, health, education, and social development.
At the TGMAs, Telecel Ghana's CEO Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai presented the award. She expressed gratitude to musicians promoting positive social change.
“Every year, we honor musicians who champion impactful causes,” she said. “I encourage artists to use their star power to advocate on important issues.”
After receiving the award, Epixode thanked Telecel Ghana in a video message. He urged fellow musicians to use their music to inspire change.
“Melodies should stir consciousness and challenge systems that oppress people,” he said. “Let’s unite our voices to stop galamsey now.”
In recent years, several artists have been recognized for their contributions through the Green Award. This award merged into the Music for Good Award in 2024.
Last year, gospel artist Eugene Zuta was honored for his advocacy against human trafficking. In 2023, Worlasi received recognition for his tree-planting project in Accra.
Stonebwoy won the award in 2022 for his song ‘Greedy Men.’ It highlighted socio-economic challenges like weak leadership and child labor.
The Music for Good Award emphasizes music's role in driving social change in Ghana. The TGMAs celebrate outstanding musical talent across various genres each year.
