Bank of Ghana Board Member Isaac Adongo says the government is committed to removing the COVID-19 levy. He also mentioned plans for a better Value Added Tax (VAT) system.
On JoyNews’ PM Express, he addressed claims that the government failed to eliminate the levy. He stated that this process is ongoing and part of broader tax reforms.
“We haven’t failed,” he said. Adongo explained that they have a roadmap for addressing the COVID levy alongside VAT changes.
He emphasized a comprehensive review of VAT and the COVID levy. This aims to create a tax system that raises revenue while providing relief to Ghanaians.
When asked if keeping the levy breaks promises, Adongo disagreed. “Putting it in the manifesto doesn’t mean we cannot do it,” he clarified.
He assured viewers that VAT reform is in progress. The goal is to create a robust VAT system without the COVID levy.
Adongo stressed that timelines are important for structural reforms. He urged patience from the public as they work on solutions.
The NDC-led government faces pressure from civil society, businesses, and citizens regarding the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy. This levy was introduced during the pandemic's peak.
The party campaigned on eliminating this burden, criticizing previous fiscal policies. However, Adongo insists their promise remains intact through an overhaul of the VAT system.
“We want more than just removing a tax,” he stated. “We aim to build a fair and efficient modern VAT system.”
