3i Africa Summit: BoG Governor calls for continental coordination to drive digital financial integration

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiamah, spoke at the 3i Africa Policy Forum in Accra. He stressed the need for coordination across Africa to enhance digital financial integration.

Dr. Asiamah pointed out that national initiatives are promising but insufficient. He emphasized that achieving "One Africa, One Market" requires continental efforts. This includes harmonizing regulations and fostering interoperability among financial systems.

The forum's theme was "One Africa, One Market: Driving Innovation, Investment, and Impact for a Connected Future." It gathered leaders from policy, finance, and technology sectors to discuss digital financial integration in Africa.

Dr. Asiamah acknowledged progress in fintech and cross-border payments. However, he called for bold actions to improve financial inclusion and intra-African trade. He stated that scaling these solutions is essential for aligning with the AfCFTA.

The Bank of Ghana is committed to this agenda. Dr. Asiamah mentioned collaborations with the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) and Rwanda's National Bank on fintech passporting.

A new partnership was announced with Rwanda's National Bank and Singapore's Global Financial Technology Network. This collaboration focuses on modernizing Africa’s cross-border payment system through innovative approaches led by central banks.

Dr. Asiamah urged participants to be ambitious and united in their goals. He expressed hope that the forum would mark a shift from vision to action in building a connected African financial ecosystem by 2030.

He concluded by stating that Africa should confidently embrace its role as a digital financial leader. The 3i Africa Policy Forum aims to produce tangible outcomes and partnerships for economic integration in Africa.
