The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has clarified that the 5.7% economic growth recorded in 2024 was primarily driven by data and SMS usage in the Information and Communication Services sector, contradicting Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson’s claim that the growth was mainly due to illegal small-scale mining (galamsey).
Government Statistician Professor Samuel Kobina Anim, speaking in Parliament on March 11, emphasized that the services sector contributed the most (2.51%) to the GDP growth, followed by industry (2.24%), which includes mining and quarrying.
He highlighted that data and SMS services were the key drivers of economic expansion in the services sector, reinforcing the role of digital consumption in Ghana’s economic growth.
