President of the Association of Ghana Industries, Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, has criticised Ghana’s failure to use the Covid-19 crisis as a launchpad for economic transformation.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, he said the pandemic offered a golden chance for Ghana to boost local manufacturing and reduce import dependency—but the opportunity was missed.
He pointed to recent external shocks, like the U.S. imposing a 10% tariff on cocoa exports, as proof of the country’s vulnerability. While government talks about restructuring, Dr. Ayim-Darke said actual progress remains limited. He highlighted efforts in the energy sector but questioned their long-term success.
Calling for action over promises, he warned that without bold steps, Ghana risks remaining trapped in a cycle of economic imbalance and missed opportunities.
