The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has criticized the government’s decision to extend the sunset clause for the Growth and Sustainability Levy (GSL) and the Special Import Levy to 2028.
AGI Greater Accra Chairman Tsonam Akpeloo described the move as a setback for businesses, especially in manufacturing and industry. The extension, announced in the 2025 Budget by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, includes an increase in the GSL from 1% to 3% on mining companies to benefit from rising gold prices.
While acknowledging some positive budget measures, Akpeloo stressed that businesses had expected these levies to end in 2024. He warned that the extension would increase operational costs and hinder competitiveness, adding that AGI would engage the government to reconsider the 2028 deadline.
