The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) raised concerns on Monday. They questioned the government's fumigation contract with Jospong Group of Companies. This group operates Zoomlion Ghana Limited. The AMA cited a lack of consultation and transparency.
Madam Florence Kuukyi is the Director of Public Health at AMA. She emphasized the need for a review to ensure accountability. "We want a review and repackaging of the SIP contract," she said. She wants implementers to have a say in it.
Madam Kuukyi spoke during a visit with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources in Accra. She noted, "Whatever they are doing, our faces are following them." If things are done right, they will know; if not, they will also know.
She expressed frustration over current processes. Contracts are signed without involving key actors within assemblies. "All these contracts are always signed at the blind side of the implementers," she stated. They only receive reports to sign as witnesses.
This is not the first time Zoomlion's contracts have faced scrutiny. In 2017, investigations revealed issues with their contracts. Eleven Jospong companies were single-sourced for a GH¢98 million fumigation contract without adequate consultation with local assemblies. Some assembly officials claimed they were unaware of which companies would operate in their areas.
