The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has a new request. He wants heads of second-cycle institutions to start farming. This will help supplement food supplies in Senior High Schools.
Opoku stated that the ministry is ready to support schools. They aim to help schools grow their own food. This will reduce the food shortages reported in many institutions.
Before launching the Feed Ghana Initiative, he spoke about its importance. He believes empowering schools to produce food enhances food security. It also teaches agricultural skills to students.
Opoku urged all secondary schools to establish school farms. He noted that the school feeding program faces many challenges. Reports indicate some schools are not receiving enough food, causing student distress.
He asked if schools could use local fertile soil for farming. This would help supplement the school feeding program. The Ministry of Food and Agriculture is prepared to provide necessary inputs for institutional farming. He encouraged all schools to participate in this initiative.
