Several African Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) from South Africa, Zambia, Ghana, Kenya, and Russia have opposed Ghana's plan to build a nuclear power plant, citing the risks and consequences associated with nuclear energy.
These organizations argue that nuclear energy is unsafe, costly, and environmentally damaging, and advocate for renewable energy alternatives like solar, wind, and hydro.
Concerns raised include the dangers of nuclear waste, health risks, and the potential for nuclear proliferation. They also stress that Ghana lacks the necessary infrastructure and preparedness for managing nuclear energy.
CSO leaders, including Alberta Kpeleku of 360 Human Rights and Chibeze Ezekiel of SYND Ghana, emphasized the need for Ghana to focus on renewable energy, which offers a safer and more sustainable solution for the country's energy needs.
