In the final week of Nana Akufo-Addo's administration, 102 mining-related licenses were issued, raising concerns about transparency in Ghana’s mining sector.
Between January 1 and January 6, 2025, approvals included 21 small-scale mining licenses and 81 prospecting and mining support permits.
Alarmingly, 67 licenses were issued on January 1, a public holiday, to companies like African Mining Services Ghana Limited and Afrique Atlantic Services Ghana Limited.
On January 6, the administration’s last day, five additional licenses went to Joekay Mining and Trading Limited and Isaac Brothers Limited.
In contrast, the Mahama administration has issued only one mining license since January 7. The unprecedented surge in approvals during Akufo-Addo's final days has raised questions about governance, with the new administration tasked to restore trust and ensure sustainable resource management.
