Market Queen Mothers in the Ashanti Region have urged traders to lower prices. They want prices to reflect the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi, especially against the US dollar.
At a press conference in Kumasi, they praised President John Dramani Mahama. They credited his leadership for strengthening the local currency and reducing fuel prices over the past five months.
Madam Grace Adjei Darko, Adwenhemaa of the Ashanti Region, spoke about traders' responsibilities. She said they should adjust their prices according to improved economic indicators. Reducing goods and transport fares would ease financial burdens on Ghanaians.
“We commend President Mahama for stabilizing the economy,” Madam Adjei Darko stated. “Now that the cedi is strong and fuel prices are down, we urge traders and drivers to reflect these changes.”
She also appealed to the government to sustain the cedi’s appreciation. Additionally, she proposed a duty-free port policy to lower imported goods' costs.
Nana Akosua Pokua, Anweniehemaa of Abediakyire, highlighted infrastructural needs in the region. She urged President Mahama to prioritize completing phase two of the Kumasi Central Market Redevelopment Project. The Krofrom Market is also critical for commercial activity.
She called for improvements in road infrastructure across parts of Ashanti Region. This would facilitate smoother movement of goods and people.
