BMW delays electric Mini over ‘uncertainty’

BMW has confirmed a delay in reintroducing battery-electric Mini production at its Oxford plant amid multiple uncertainties in the automotive industry. The company has paused work on a £600m upgrade at its Cowley facility and decided not to accept a £60m government grant, although it remains in close dialogue with the UK government.

This move comes as part of broader industry concerns over the ambitious targets set under the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate, which have already influenced decisions by other manufacturers.

Despite ongoing investments, including a new state-of-the-art logistics facility, the production of new electric Mini models initially planned for 2026 is now under review.

Meanwhile, the Department for Transport is consulting on reinstating the 2030 electric vehicle deadline and investing over £2.3bn to support the shift to electric mobility.
