The Bank of Ghana (BoG) will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Ghana cedi on July 19, 2025.
A statement from the central bank was released on May 13. It noted that the cedi has been Ghana’s sole legal tender for 60 years.
The cedi replaced the Ghanaian Pound on July 19, 1965. Since then, it has symbolized Ghana’s economic sovereignty and development.
The BoG stated that the cedi has evolved over time. This evolution reflects changes in Ghana's economy and policies over the last six decades.
The reforms show Ghana’s tenacity, innovation, and quest for stability. They range from early notes and coins to today’s secure currency.
To mark this milestone, the BoG plans nationwide activities from July to December 2025. These will include official launches, public exhibitions, educational campaigns, and stakeholder forums.
This anniversary is a chance for Ghanaians to reflect on the cedi's history. It is also an opportunity to celebrate progress and reaffirm commitment to protecting its value.
The BoG emphasized that the cedi represents pride, heritage, and shared aspirations for a prosperous future.
They invite the public, institutions, organizations, stakeholders, and partners to join in celebrating this milestone. More details about upcoming programs will be announced soon.
The Bank of Ghana remains committed to maintaining a stable cedi for price stability in Ghana.
