Economist and former Rector of GIMPA, Professor Stephen Adei, has called for a 50% tax on betting in Ghana, describing betting as a harmful habit that should be discouraged.

He expressed his views during a TV3 interview, advocating for higher "sin taxes" on activities such as betting, smoking, and alcohol consumption.

His stance contrasts with President-elect John Dramani Mahama's pledge to remove several taxes, including the 10% betting tax, within his first 100 days in office.

Prof Adei also recommended maintaining the e-levy, highlighting its ease of collection compared to other taxes and warning that removing it could hinder tax compliance in Ghana.

He further advised Mahama to manage public expectations carefully, citing President Akufo-Addo's downfall due to poor expectation management.
