The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has criticized President John Dramani Mahama. They claim his administration has betrayed public trust. This follows the government's failure to abolish the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy.
In a statement on Sunday, the CDM expressed strong disapproval. They noted Mahama's promise to remove the levy during the 2024 election campaign. This reversal undermines public confidence in his leadership.
The CDM pointed out that Mahama called the tax "needless." He pledged to eliminate it to ease economic burdens on Ghanaians. This promise was a key part of the NDC’s campaign and resonated with citizens facing inflation.
Now, many feel disillusioned by the decision to keep the levy. The government attributes this decision to IMF conditions, which has disappointed many supporters.
The CDM emphasized that political leadership should be based on integrity and consistency. They warned that Mahama's change of heart sets a dangerous precedent. It prioritizes expediency over principle, they argue.
They referenced Article 36(1) of the 1992 Constitution. This article requires the state to ensure decent living standards for all citizens. The group believes maintaining the levy violates national and international obligations.
The CDM is calling for immediate action from the government. They demand a clear plan to abolish the tax and a formal apology from Mahama. Additionally, they seek legislative reaffirmation of ethical governance.
"Continuing this levy while citing IMF conditions is contradictory," said the group. They urged Mahama's administration to restore public trust through moral leadership.
