Workshop
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) – Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI) recently organized a sensitization workshop in Tamale to introduce stakeholders to a new high-yielding yam variety, the CSIR-SARI 1. This initiative aims to enhance food security and improve the livelihoods of farmers in the Northern Region of Ghana.
The new yam variety is characterized by its early maturation and increased resistance to pests and diseases, which makes it a promising alternative for local farmers. Stakeholders, including farmers, agricultural extension officers, and researchers, were informed about the cultivation techniques necessary for maximizing yields with this improved variety.
Dr. Alhassan Mohammed, Director of CSIR-SARI, emphasized that the introduction of this yam variety aligns with the government's agenda for agricultural modernization. He highlighted that enhancing food production is vital for achieving sustainable development goals in Ghana.
During the workshop, participants engaged in discussions about challenges faced in yam production and expressed optimism about how the new variety could address these issues. The event featured demonstrations on proper farming practices aimed at promoting successful cultivation of CSIR-SARI 1.
Farmers were encouraged to adopt this new variety as a means to boost their income levels while contributing to overall food security within their communities. The CSIR-SARI team plans further outreach programs to ensure wider dissemination of information regarding improved agricultural practices and crop varieties.
In conclusion, the introduction of CSIR-SARI 1 represents an important step towards enhancing agricultural productivity in Ghana's Northern Region, providing farmers with better tools to meet both market demands and community food needs.
