Cedi depreciates by about 4% to dollar so far in 2025 – World Bank

The Ghana Cedi has depreciated by about 4.0% against the US dollar in 2025. This information comes from the World Bank's April 2025 Africa Pulse Report.

This performance is one of the best in recent times. In 2024, the cedi lost over 17% of its value against the dollar.

In Africa, the CFA Franc is performing best. It has appreciated by about 2.0% against the US dollar.

The World Bank reports that some currencies performed poorly last year. The South Sudanese pound, Ethiopian birr, and Nigerian naira all fell over 40% in value in 2024.

As financial conditions improved, some African currencies began to strengthen. For example, the Kenyan shilling rose by 20% throughout 2024 and remains stable in 2025.

Conversely, the South African rand and related currencies have fluctuated slightly since late 2023.

Countries facing foreign exchange shortages saw their currencies weaken sharply in 2024. This was due to increased external debt service and low export revenues.
