Chinese Ambassador backs sustainable mining, community development in Ghana - Ghana Business News

Tong Defa – Chinese Ambassador to Ghana

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Tong Defa, praised the new Association of China (Ghana) Mining LBG (ACGM). He called it a vital step for sustainable development in Ghana’s mining sector.

Mr. Tong described the Association as a “bridge for win-win cooperation.” He noted that it aligns with Ghana’s goal to modernize its mining industry while protecting natural resources.

He emphasized that “Ghana’s lush forests and clear waters are as valuable as gold and silver.” He urged members to focus on ecological preservation alongside economic growth.

Ambassador Tong spoke at a ceremony in Accra. The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, inaugurated the ACGM there. The theme was “Responsibility, Sustainability, Excellence, and Growth.”

The ACGM includes major Chinese mining firms and service companies. The event also announced the China-Ghana Mining Community Development Foundation. This foundation will mobilize funds for sustainability and community empowerment initiatives.

Mr. Tang ZhenJiang is the Chairman of ACGM. Mr. Kevin Chen serves as Secretary General from Golden Star Wassa, a subsidiary of Chifeng Gold. Three Deputy Chairmen include Mr. Kevin Wu from JH Resources Exploration Limited, Mr. Libin Xu from Ghana Manganese Company Limited, and Mr. Qingming Tang from Earl International Mining Ltd.

Ambassador Tong identified five key focus areas for ACGM: standardised development, information sharing, technical cooperation, community development, and environmental protection. He pledged continued support from the Chinese Embassy.

Mr. Buah represented President John Dramani Mahama at the event. He called the inauguration a significant milestone in Ghana-China mining collaboration.

He said this partnership promises mutual growth and sustainable development while advancing technology in the sector.

Mr. Buah stressed the Government's zero tolerance for illegal mining activities like Galamsey, calling them “environmental terrorism” and “economic sabotage.”

He tasked ACGM with upholding Ghanaian mining laws while supporting community upliftment efforts.

“China has long been a partner in Ghana's mining sector,” he stated. The establishment of ACGM shows Chinese investors' commitment to responsible engagement in this critical industry.

The Minister highlighted how Chinese expertise can improve efficiency in underground mining and low-grade ore development.

Mr. Tang reaffirmed that ACGM aims to promote responsible mining and community-driven development through technological innovation.

He expressed readiness to collaborate with Ghana’s Ministries of Lands and Natural Resources and Youth Development to empower young people through cooperative systems.

“Together we will write a remarkable new chapter in China-Ghana collaboration,” he said.

The event featured cultural displays by the Atitirew Cultural Troupe along with dignitaries from Ghana’s mining sector including Ministers of State and Parliamentarians.

Notable attendees included entrepreneur Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, founder of Engineers and Planners, a mining service provider.
