The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Samuel Nartey George, has called an urgent meeting with Electronic Money Issuers (EMIs). This comes amid a rise in mobile money fraud across Ghana.
Mr. George is deeply concerned about the increase in digital financial crimes. He described this trend as “unacceptable.”
“I have summoned all EMIs to a meeting this week,” he said. He wants answers and clear strategies to protect consumers. The meeting was originally set for Thursday but was rescheduled after the Easter break at the operators' request.
The Minister emphasized that the government will not let criminals exploit the digital space. He aims to protect Ghanaians from losing their hard-earned money.
The upcoming meeting will focus on accountability and stronger user protection protocols. It will also address strict enforcement of digital security standards among service providers. “There will be consequences for platforms that do not safeguard users’ funds,” Mr. George warned.
He mentioned that the government is considering regulatory reforms for tighter controls in digital payments. “We are reviewing the regulatory environment,” he stated. If necessary, they will amend laws to ensure stricter compliance.
Mr. George encouraged mobile money users to take proactive steps against fraud. “While the government is doing its part, users must also be cautious and informed,” he advised. He urged the public to report any suspicious activity immediately.
He shared these insights during an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, April 15.
