DVLA saddled with 'dirty' debts: CEO

The CEO of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Mr. Julius Neequaye Kotey, has raised concerns about inherited debts. These debts were left by his predecessor, Kwasi Agyemang Busia.

On March 28, 2024, Mr. Kotey spoke on Class 91.3 FM’s morning show with Kwame Dwomoh Agyemang. He revealed that he found significant financial liabilities upon taking office. “I don’t want to slander my predecessor, but the only thing he left me with is debt,” he said.

Mr. Kotey mentioned that the DVLA's dollar account has a debt of about $150 million. The cedi account holds a debt of approximately GH₵300 million. He attributed these financial challenges to prior commitments made by the former CEO.

One major issue from this debt is the lack of license printing for nearly a year and a half. Suppliers have not been paid, causing delays in services. However, Mr. Kotey shared some good news: he has negotiated with suppliers to resume printing licenses next week.

“After I humbly engaged the suppliers, they agreed to supply without advance payment,” he stated. He also promised to use Information Communication Technology (ICT) to address many of DVLA's problems.

Mr. Kotey is focused on resolving the debt crisis and restoring essential services like issuing driver’s licenses.
