Deputy Chief of Staff affirms government's resolute stance against corruption - Ghana Business News

Nana Oye Bampoe Addo is the Deputy Chief of Staff. She reaffirmed the government's commitment to fighting corruption. This makes corruption a high-risk venture for offenders.

She spoke at the launch of the final Evaluation Report of the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP) in Accra on Friday. The 10-year plan started in 2015 and will end in 2024. It aims to build public capacity against corruption and promote transparency and accountability.

The plan also encourages individuals, media, and Civil Society Organizations to report corruption. However, Madam Bampoe Addo expressed dissatisfaction with progress made so far. The country's Corruption Perception Index (CPI) has shown limited improvement over three years.

In both 2022 and 2023, Ghana's CPI score was 43, indicating stagnation. In 2024, it dropped to 42, showing declining public trust in transparency. Recent surveys revealed minimal progress in tackling corruption.

Madam Bampoe Addo stated that these surveys show corruption remains a significant challenge in Ghana. “This Report has not given us a clean slate on the fight against corruption,” she said. Despite these challenges, she emphasized the government’s commitment to combatting corruption.

She mentioned initiatives like “Operation Recover All Loot.” Professor Francis Dodoo has been appointed as Presidential Advisor for the National Anti-Corruption Programme.

Madam Bampoe Addo announced plans for NACAP II to further reduce corruption. She highlighted the government's dedication to fulfilling anti-corruption obligations under UNCAC.

“Government is fully committed to satisfying international anti-corruption obligations,” she said. Professor Simon Mariwah stressed the need for dedicated funding for NACAP II activities. He suggested CHRAJ should secure long-term funding for anti-corruption initiatives.

Prof. Mariwah also recommended regular evaluations during NACAP II's implementation. Dr. Joseph Whittal from CHRAJ pledged to adopt recommendations from the report. He emphasized ensuring sustainable funding for NACAP II.

“We need dedicated funding to avoid past difficulties faced by NACAP I,” he said.
