Deputy Finance Minister urges diasporans to continue sending remittances despite cedi appreciation

Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem urged Ghanaians abroad to invest and send money home. He assured them that the government is committed to keeping the cedi stable.

Mr. Ampem spoke to the Ghanaian community in Germany during the Hamburg Sustainability Conference 2025. He addressed concerns about delays in remittances due to the cedi's recent appreciation against foreign currencies.

“Don’t hold back,” he said. “We will work hard to keep the cedi strong.” He warned that waiting for a depreciation before transferring money could lead to disappointment.

The Deputy Finance Minister explained that a stronger cedi benefits the economy. This should encourage financial inflows from abroad, not deter them.

“We are trying our best to strengthen the cedi and boost the economy,” he stated. “We want you to be proud and contribute in any way you can.”

His comments come amid discussions about how exchange rate fluctuations affect diaspora remittances and investments. In recent years, Ghana has seen increased remittance inflows, which support households and local businesses.

The government has implemented measures like tighter monetary policies and better forex management. These aim to stabilize the cedi after periods of depreciation.

Mr. Ampem expressed confidence in these policies. He encouraged Ghanaians abroad to stay engaged in national development.

“Your contributions matter,” he said. “We are working to ensure your investments are safe and beneficial for both you and the country.”
