Professor Ransford Yaw Gyampo, CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, has urged border officers to prioritize national interests in international trade.
During his visit to the freight park at Elubo in the Western Region, he emphasized the importance of supporting Ghana's transit trade to boost revenue for development and reduce poverty.
Prof. Gyampo highlighted his administration's focus on expanding the export market to drive economic growth. He also announced that the Legislative Instrument to operationalize the Shippers Law Act 1122 of 2024 would soon be enacted.
Additionally, he stressed the need for effective collaboration to protect local businesses from foreign competition.
Assistant Commissioner of Customs Louis Dan Mennia, outlined challenges at the Elubo border, including inadequate infrastructure to handle growing cargo volumes and safety concerns over explosives transported through the corridor.
He called for better resources, including surveillance and scanning machinery, to enhance efficiency.
Stakeholders also expressed concerns about shipping delays leading to additional costs for consumers and emphasized the need for extended working hours and improved operational systems at the border.
