Dumsor: We have a combined loss of over 1,418 megawatts from the country’s installed capacity – IES

Unannounced power outage in Ghana Unannounced power outage in Ghana

Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), has warned of a looming power crisis in Ghana due to the shutdown of key plants: Asogli Power Plant, Amandi Energy, and Bridge Power.

The closures have caused a loss of 1,418 MW, leaving the country with less than 4,000 MW of available capacity to meet a peak demand of 3,700 MW.

He criticized the government’s claims of progress, noting that Bridge Power is not new and Asogli remains offline due to unresolved financial issues. Additionally, Karpower operates far below its potential, producing only 53 MW.

The reduced capacity threatens prolonged outages (“Dumsor”) and undermines investor confidence. Nana Amoasi called for urgent financial settlements and sustainable strategies to stabilize the energy sector.
