E-Levy Could Return In Future – GAB President

John Awuah is the President of the Ghana Association of Bankers (GAB). He suggested that the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) might return in the future. This is due to rapid digitalization in global economies.

Mr. Awuah spoke during an interview on Good Afternoon Ghana. He noted that digital transactions are becoming more common worldwide. Governments may consider measures like the E-Levy to boost domestic revenue.

“Digitalization has taken over every economy in the world,” he said. He believes that, given current trends, the E-Levy could be reintroduced.

Mr. Awuah did not clearly support or oppose the levy. However, he recognized its importance in a growing digital economy. Traditional taxation methods may become less effective over time.

The E-Levy was first introduced in 2022. It charged fees on electronic transactions and received mixed public reactions. Many were concerned about its effects on mobile money usage and financial inclusion. The government later revised it and eventually shelved it due to public backlash and policy changes.
