Tensions are rising at the Suhum lorry station. Drivers on the Suhum–Koforidua route refuse to lower transport fares. This defiance follows recent fuel price adjustments.
Passengers and transport authorities expected fare reductions. However, many drivers want to keep fares unchanged. This has led to confusion and dissatisfaction among commuters.
In interviews with Accra FM/CTV, several drivers voiced their frustrations. They described public expectations as unrealistic. Although fuel prices have slightly dropped, other costs remain high.
One driver explained, “We are not just paying for fuel.” He added that costs for tires and servicing have not decreased. “If we reduce the fare now, we’ll be running at a loss,” he said.
This situation has created a standoff between drivers and passengers. Some commuters accuse drivers of exploiting the situation for profit. Transport unions have not yet issued a formal statement.
Sources indicate discussions are ongoing among stakeholders. The goal is to avoid potential clashes in the area. As fuel prices change, the public demands fair fare adjustments.
For now, the standoff in Suhum remains unresolved.
