The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), in partnership with Brainsfield Ltd., has launched a smart prepaid meter system to combat electricity theft and minimize losses under ECG’s Loss Reduction Programme (LRP).

The new meters, Single Phase BY100C and Three Phase BY300C, feature advanced anti-tampering measures and real-time communication with ECG’s servers. They allow mobile credit purchases, usage monitoring, and accurate billing, ensuring cost efficiency for customers.

Brainsfield Ltd. plans to establish a meter assembly plant in Accra to produce 200,000 units annually. The project rollout began in Kumasi's Manhyia District, with a nationwide replacement planned.

ECG pledged to educate customers on the transition, emphasizing the meters' role in improving efficiency and addressing longstanding challenges like electricity theft and revenue loss. This aligns with Ghana’s broader digitization agenda.
