Editorial: Destructive human activities pose huge threat to water-bodies

Doctors at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi have suspended all surgeries. This decision is due to a water shortage affecting the hospital since last week.

In a memo dated March 25, 2025, the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association informed management of this action. They believe it is necessary for patient safety and security. The association noted that the hospital faces severe challenges from the ongoing water shortage.

Ghana's rivers, including the Pra, Ankobra, Birim, and Offin, are under threat. Illegal mining, pollution from industries and households, and climate change contribute to this crisis. These factors may lead to water scarcity and health issues.

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has raised concerns about the Densu River's condition. They warn that human activities beyond illegal mining are polluting this vital water source. Additionally, GWCL loses 51% of produced water due to leaks and illegal usage.

They only collect revenue for 41% of the water supplied nationwide. Despite having abundant rivers and lakes, Ghana must protect its water resources. Clean water is essential for cultural, economic, and environmental sustainability.

As urbanization increases, access to clean drinking water becomes crucial. It is important to address activities that pollute our waterways through regulation or sanctions. Every small effort toward conservation matters.

World Water Day is observed annually on March 22nd. This day emphasizes the importance of freshwater conservation worldwide.
