Editorial: Second national gas processing plant....

Mr. Jinapor announced the formation of two committees in Accra. These are the Technical and Steering committees for the second national gas processing plant (GPP2).

The minister stated that GPP2 aims to provide a cheaper alternative to liquid fuel for electricity generation. Currently, Ghana faces a gas deficit of about 100 million standard cubic feet (MMscf). This shortage forces the country to purchase expensive liquid fuel.

The government plans to build GPP2 to address this issue. It is expected that Ghana could save up to US$500 million annually with this project. The savings from using gas instead of liquid fuel can fund the new gas plant.

GPP2 is a strategic initiative to expand Ghana’s gas infrastructure. It will help meet growing domestic needs and reduce annual natural gas losses. The project aims to increase gas consumption and improve access to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Additionally, it is expected to create both direct and indirect jobs. Minister for Finance Cassiel Ato Forson emphasized that the gas shortfall leaves no choice but to buy liquid fuel for thermal plants.
