Emulate KATH management – parliament to state-owned health facilities

The Committee inspected KATH recently. Dr. Thomas Anabah led the delegation. He expressed strong approval of the hospital's operations. He said, “We are really impressed with the way the hospital is being managed.”

This commendation follows the dismissal of Dr. Atik Adam, CEO of Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH). His termination was due to allegations of mismanagement and medical negligence. These issues reportedly led to a patient’s death.

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, visited TTH unannounced. He was dissatisfied with the state of healthcare delivery there. Non-functional essential medical equipment was also present.

In contrast, Dr. Anabah praised KATH as a model institution. It serves nearly 12 regions as a primary referral facility. He noted, “We had no cause to raise concerns about hygiene or operations.” Kumasi South Hospital also met similar standards.

Dr. Anabah commended KATH for reinvesting its internally generated funds into renovations. This shows that any funding support will be used effectively. He encouraged management to apply for funding for new equipment.

He mentioned that the Committee plans to advise parliament on credit facilities for KATH. This would enhance service delivery at the hospital.

Despite these praises, KATH's management highlighted urgent challenges they face. The dialysis unit and other medical equipment need improvements for better healthcare delivery.

Professor Dr. Otchere Addai-Mensah is the CEO of KATH. He expressed gratitude for the Committee’s visit and feedback received. He values their suggestions and commits to implementing them.

“As CEO, I promise to use insights from our discussions,” he stated. Their goal is to minimize errors and provide high-quality care to patients and clients.
