Minister for Energy and Green Transition John Abdulai Jinapor warned on March 7 at Jubilee House that Ghana’s energy sector is "bleeding" and urgently needs intervention.

Speaking after President Mahama’s second cabinet meeting, he emphasized that the current energy infrastructure is under immense strain and is unsustainable.

To address this, the Cabinet has approved the construction of a second Cargo Berthing Mooring (CBM) at Tema, aiming to ease operational inefficiencies and high demurrage costs caused by an 186% surge in petroleum demand since 2006. Additionally, the government plans to expand fuel storage facilities in Takoradi to stabilize the supply chain.

Jinapor also stressed that private sector participation in downstream distribution is vital, as these initiatives form part of a broader strategy to strengthen Ghana’s energy sector and ensure a reliable fuel supply.
