President John Dramani Mahama has called for a digital tolling system in Ghana.
He spoke at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit. He highlighted Ghana's technological progress, including the Ghana Card. This card links to services like driver’s licenses and vehicle registration.
President Mahama believes these innovations will drive change. He noted that every car is now linked to its owner's Ghana Card. This means we can move away from old toll gates.
"We will just go straight to digitalise," he stated.
The proposed digital tolling system would use cameras at toll points. For example, at the East Legon bridge, cameras would capture vehicle images.
If a car crosses the bridge, a picture is taken. A bill will then be sent to the owner. Payments can be made through mobile money or bank accounts.
This system aims to remove physical toll gates. It will help reduce congestion and improve efficiency for drivers.
By using existing digital infrastructure, the government can enhance convenience for drivers. This comes as the government considers reintroducing road tolls.
The theme of this year's summit was "Leading Ghana's Economic Reset: Transforming Business and Governance for a Sustainable Futuristic Economy."
